I heard recently that a business is claiming the placenta is safe to still encapsulate if sent to pathology for further testing. This is untrue and not safe at all. Firstly, there is no way we could guarantee that the placenta has been kept cold at required temperature while being examined which means bacteria starts to grow if left out of fridge for too long, which is dangerous for you to consume! Secondly, the placenta is likely in contact or washed with chemicals for examination, these in no way can be washed off, so you can encapsulate. Chemicals used will remain on the placenta, too unsafe to consume! These departments are not trained in placenta encapsulate safety and do not know required time and temperatures to keep. You however have a right to keep your placenta, unless infection is suspected or in the sad case of the loss of your baby. It's best to discuss with your doctor so they can take a smaller piece if its recommended to send for further testing and you can hold on to your placenta in a safe environment until you get the go ahead that encapsulating is safe for you to continue.
